Publish Asia 2018: Reinventing News Publishing Business Models

Singapore – 2018-04-12

The quest for new revenue streams and business models for news media will be uppermost on the minds of participants at this year’s Publish Asia taking place on the Indonesian resort island of Bali from 24-26 April 2018. More than 250 media executives from over 30 countries are meeting at the Westin Resort Nusa Dua for three days of masterclasses, conference sessions and networking events.

Now in its 18th year, Publish Asia will focus on business and management issues facing newspaper publishers as they explore emerging business models and diversifying revenue channels.

Patrick Daniel, Chairman of WAN-IFRA’s Asia-Pacific Committee, which comprises senior executives and editors from leading news media companies in the region, said: “Readership of news media in some developed markets has already reached a tipping point with digital consumers exceeding print readers. News publishers are keen to experiment with new ways to engage readers on their preferred platforms. Publish Asia brings together innovative first-movers in our industry to share their best strategies and the valuable lessons they have learnt.”

There will also be dedicated sessions on the challenges facing editors, newsroom managers and journalists today. Participants will hear from the industry’s innovators and leading minds about the latest initiatives, trends and solutions being rolled out while reflecting on heavyweight issues of concern, including challenges to press freedom and journalist security, both personal and digital.

Over 30 speakers from 15 countries in the Asia-Pacific and Europe will be flying in to share their knowledge and experience with participants.

Among the headlining speakers at Publish Asia, Wolfgang Krach, Editor-in-Chief of Süddeutsche Zeitung, one of Germany’s largest dailies by circulation and the newspaper best known for receiving the first leaked documents which would ultimately spin off into the Panama Papers project which exposed secretive holdings in the offshore finance industry. The year-long project involved nearly 400 journalists and researchers from 100 media organisations in over 80 countries around the world. Mr Krach will be joined by Panama Papers collaborators, Scilla Alecci, investigative reporter with the International Consortium of Investigative Journalists and Wahyu Dhyatmika, Editor at Indonesia’s Tempo Media Group. They will speak about their Pulitzer-winning work and how to launch similar projects in the session titled, “Journalism that Makes a Difference”.

Publish Asia will feature a C-suite line-up of speakers including The Hindu Group’s CEO Rajiv C Lochan; Kompas Gramedia’s Vice CEO Jayant Bhargava; Singapore Press Holdings’ Deputy CEO Anthony Tan; South China Morning Post COO Elsie Cheung; New Straits Times Press’ CCO Alfian Talib; Khaleej Times’ Senior VP Ravi Raman and Brand New Media Founder and CEO Damien Bray. Together with The Economist’s Managing Editor for Thought Leadership (Asia), Rashmi Dalai, they will discuss how they are rethinking news publishing business models, with some elaborating on their successful approaches in content marketing.
