Reacting to yet another journalist killing in Mexico, over 100 human rights organisations and journalists from around the world united in an unprecented move to express their outrage and to call on the Mexican government to put an immediate end to crimes against freedom of expression in the country.

Mexican crime reporter Victor Manuel Báez Chino was killed on Thursday morning in Xalapa, the capital of the State of Veracruz. He had been kidnapped on Wednesday evening after he left his office.

Anabel Hernández, periodista y escritora mexicana conocida por su labor de investigación sobre la corrupción y el abuso de poder entre políticos mexicanos, ha sido distinguida con el premio Pluma de Oro de la Libertad 2012, el galardón que la Asociación Mundial de Periódicos y Editores de Noticias (WAN-IFRA) concede anualmente en defensa de la libertad de prensa.

Anabel Hernández, a Mexican journalist and writer known for her investigative reporting on corruption and the abuse of power in Mexican politics, has been awarded the 2012 Golden Pen of Freedom, the annual press freedom prize of the World Association of Newspapers and News Publishers (WAN-IFRA).

Weekly newspaper Río Doce is a rare success story of independent journalism in one of the world’s most dangerous regions for media professionals. Based in the city of Culiacán, capital of the north western state of Sinaloa, in Mexico, the publication received the 2011 edition of the prestigious Maria Moors Cabot Prizes, awarded by the Columbia University Graduate School of Journalism, in recognition for the most outstanding reporting on Latin America and the Caribbean. WAN-IFRA interviewed Mr. Ismael Bojorquez Perea, one of the founders and current director of Río Doce.
